Statement My photography seeks to crack open the everyday. The everyday is your life. The main events in your life are brushing your teeth in the morning and setting the alarm clock at night, even if you may prefer to think about your wedding day and that Barbados vacation. What lies beneath? States of flux. I treat everyday objects as signifiers of vanishing and emerging value systems. During the past decade and a half, Russia has been struggling to revert the changes made during the hectic years following 1917. It is being de-revolutionized by yet another revolution that has, to much local opposition, opened the floodgates to commercialism, self-realization and individualism. The USSR had transformed the nation's image into an elaborate myth, with all manner of romantic illusions woven into the activities of the population. The system's disintegration led to the rapid installation of a different Grand Narrative. A new illusory version of everyday life was hastily papered over the fading heroes and cultural icons that once represented an entire nation and a now lost epoch. Life is
lived between the different spectacles' soundstages. Bee Flowers
